5 Benefits of House Plants
I love greenery in my home. From the moment you enter my apartment, you’ll find a wall hanging on my front door with a flower arrangement that I change every few weeks. Then I have a fern, fiddle leaf fig, an orchid, ivy, succulents and air plants everywhere!!! I also have a herb garden (which is something everyone should have). My girls love to water it and we pick different herbs each day for different meals. Having greenery in my house makes it feel like a home. But, there are many more reasons why you should have greenery throughout your home. When you enhance interior spaces with houseplants, you’re not just adding greenery. These living things interact with your body, mind and home in ways that enhance the quality of your life.
Here are 5 reasons why you need houseplants in your home!
1.Plants help to purify your air of toxins like benzene and formaldehyde and lower your risk of illness.
NASA research discovered that plants purify trapped air by pulling contaminants into soil, where root zone microorganisms convert volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into food for the plant. NASA even uses plants on the International Space Station to help with air quality!
2. They help us breathe easier.
When you breathe, your body takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This opposite pattern of gas makes plants and people natural partners. Adding plants to interior spaces can increase oxygen levels! At night though, plants typically respire like humans and start absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. However, there are a few plants that do just the opposite. They take in the carbon dioxide and release oxygen over night. Plants like orchids, succulents and epiphytic bromeliads are great to have in the bedroom to refresh air during the night.
3. They can improve your health.
According to researchers at Kansas State University, adding plants to hospital rooms speeds recovery rates of surgical patients. These patients requested less pain medication, had lower heart rates and blood pressure, experienced less fatigue and anxiety, and were released from the hospital sooner. Adding plants to office settings decreases fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms.
4. They boost your mood.
Caring for plants can help you increase your compassion and improve your relationships. Touching soft and smooth plants may also make you feel calmer.
5. They make your house a home.
I put at least one plant in each room. Not only do they help detoxify the air, they make a room come together. Plants are living things, and when you’re surrounded by living things you will feel better. You’re literally bringing more life into your house! Fragrant plants like dwarf Kaffir lime trees will also fill the room with the most wonderful scents. It’s an all-natural alternative to those wall plug-ins with artificial fragrance chemicals. Yuck!
